VeriChip is the first Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved human-implantable radio-frequency identification (RFID) microchip. It is a device marketed by VeriChip Corporation (Since re-branded as the PositiveID Corporation via corporate merger), a subsidiary of Applied Digital Solutions (Digital Angel, Inc. develops global positioning satellite [GPS] and radio-frequency identification [RFID] technology products for consumer, commercial, and government sectors worldwide. Its principal location in Delray Beach, Florida, their products include RFID applications, end-to-end food safety systems, GPS/Satellite communications and telecommunications technology, security infrastructure and the VeriChip human implant), and it received United States FDA approval in 2004. Approximately twice the length of a grain of rice, the device is typically implanted above the triceps area of an individual’s right arm. Once scanned at the proper frequency, the VeriChip responds with a unique 16 digit numerical signature which is then linked with information referent to the user. Such abstracts are then digitally encrypted on a computer database for purposes relevant to identity verification, medical records access, individual credit information, financial status and holdings, etc.

The aforementioned paragraph briefly elaborates on the history and nature of such a device; detailing its purpose relevant to the aspect of a federally legislated surveillance system initiated shortly after the occurrence of events surrounding 9.11.2001. Since the initial phases of its production VeriChip itself has undergone numerous modifications pursuant to its principal issuance. In 2007 the VeriChip Corporation, originally recognized as a subsidiary of Applied Digital Solutions, created Xmark as a means to establish a corporate identity relevant to the dispensation of healthcare related products and services. In accordance with the legislative protocol affiliated with such corporate holdings as those which have attained precedence in Xmark, the VeriChip Corporation has since modified its principal design through the machinations of its technological development branch to include a federally based "emergency preparedness" legislative mandate pursuant to the incidences of viral/ biological pandemic (The H1N1 Swine Flu Virus, the H5N1 Avian Flu, and other pathogenic agents deemed as being bio-threats). VeriChip, through Receptors LLC (A company based in Minnesota), has recently begun the development of virus detection technology in accordance with federally-based legislative sanctions.
